Content strategy and content design

Content strategy ensures you have the right website content to start with, and keeps your website manageable in the long term. In a nutshell, it is a planned approach to web content that looks at the big picture as well as the details.

Aspects of content strategy include: content audit (assessing existing content), content planning (research and recommendations), content creation (writing, commissioning, editing), content management and workflow (production processes) and governance (a plan for maintaining content in future).

Related to this is content design, a user-centred approach to creating web content that ensures people can find what they need from your website as easily as possible. My experience as a journalist and editor gives me the user-focused approach that this requires.

Web editing

Web editing needs traditional copy editing skills to ensure that your text is accurate, readable and right for the audience and medium. It also needs digital know-how to cover areas such as usability (how user-friendly the site is) and search engine optimisation (how Google-friendly the site is). I can offer both traditional and digital skills.

Content marketing and brand journalism

Content marketing – whether it’s a blog, newsletter, or case study – is about creating useful, shareable information that will position you as an expert in your field. It has to avoid the hard sell. My journalistic skills can give you the credibility you need.

Plain English editing

I can turn difficult-to-read text into something that people can read quickly and understand immediately. This is vital for government bodies, NGOs and any organisation that wants to communicate clearly. I have a Plain English Campaign award to prove my expertise in this area.

Training and coaching

My approach after completing a project is to empower your staff with the basic skills and confidence to pick up the day-to-day maintenance themselves. This might be creating an editorial house style or content calendar, coaching staff in how to use a content management system, or providing training in areas such as social media management, writing for the web or plain English.
